This is the consequences from corrupt politicians. People has really short memory about Pol Pot and who sponsored Pol Pot and funded them. Hunsen, his party and Cambodia people sell the country to China. Don't blame anyone else for your own choice, especially Vietnam to have a good reason. China propaganda always mentions Vietnam as a villian. But China slowly takes control your country and kick all the locals from businesses. China controls your country through corrupt politicians and debt trap. Maybe sell the use of lands to China 100 years to pay the debt. How does it feel like second citizen in your own country? Lost all the markets to China and live like a guest in your own country. Prepare to learn Mandarin as your first language. All of investment but doesn't profit locals, only government and chinese investors. It's easy to welcome Chinese to come but really hard to tell them go back. Maybe in the future, the Chinese citizen are more than Cambodian to live in Cambodia. Soon you will clearly see the result in the next 20 - 30 years. You lose your cultures, replace it will be Chinese towns, Chinese goods from China. There won't have rooms, place to self reliance, only hire to work for Chinese.

You should stop exaggerating that the town has become Chinese just because of a few casinos and some Chinese settlers. Some prefer the town to remain as it was without development and the people remain poor but this is selfish.There are thousands of westerners in Phuket or Pattaya and no body complains the towns have turn western.

Cambodia needs to stop selling itself to China. The country should only accept responsible investors who can show some respect to the people of the country they invest in. The country is destroying itself completely. Nobody will want to come visit Cambodia anymore if it becomes Chinese and has no more beautiful landscapes to see and explore. What’s interesting about skyscrapers that all look the same? Can you see identity and culture in high rise buildings? Could you tell the difference between a modern 300 meters tall block of cement in Russia and a modern 300 meters tall block of cement if Cambodia? There is no culture and identity in modernisation and globalisation. I understand the need for Cambodia to modernise itself but the country is starting to lose its identity and what used to make the country worth visiting.

Last time I went to Sihanoukville was in 2012 and it was still okay. That’s also when it started to completely transform.

I might sound rude here but if my poor country got huge investment for some patches of forest being removed and local life being disturbed, I would still take the trade. People from developed countries don't seem to understand, living a life where your livelyhood depends on good rain so that you and ur family doesn't starve is not a good life. Sure, a land not touched by modernization has it's charm but at some point people want the modern comfort and improve quality of life.

This documentary was made and released on the verge of the Covid-19 pandemic. I have to think that the last two years have turned Sihanoukville inside out. Chinese can’t travel. Russians can’t travel. As well as Europeans. What has happened to Sihanoukville since then? Has it collapsed financially? What about the women you interviewed? Where are they today? I have been following the rise of Sihanoukville for a few years. I am dumbfounded why the large business media companies (Bloomberg, Reuters, AP, Nikki, FInancial TImes and others) have not reported on this. The Chinese could be the world’s most incredible developers and builders. Did they walk away from Sihanoukville? I have seen drone video of Sihanoukville filmed in the last 12 months. It’s looks finished. The cranes are gone. The muddy streets have now are clean and paved like any modern city. But i don’t see the people. Like the GHOST CITIES of CHINA, i believe this is one of those remarkable stories of capitalism and human endeavor (that has had the rug pulled out from it).

Indeed, I believe Cambodia has been colonised by the China. It is ruled by the CCP.

It is such a shame what has happened here, I used to love going to the beach with my wife and kids but now all the prices have doubled or trebled and no Khmers can afford to visit it either. Before it was a good mix of expats and local Khmers, now it is just the Chinese. The Khmers have been pushed out of their own homes for Chinese profit.
